Whitby Chiefs Junior Rookie Team 3rd at London SW Tournament
The Junior Rookie Whitby Chiefs took 3rd place in the London
SW Tournament on the weekend of July 17-18.
Undefeated in their first three games on Saturday vs. Waterloo, Vaughan and
North York (in arguably the toughest division in the tournament), the Chiefs
went into the semi-final game on Sunday morning with the best overall record
among the 12 teams playing, allowing only 11 runs in 20 innings.
With a slow start in the semi-final game against the Cambridge Cubs, Whitby
found themselves in a near mercy deficit early on and were only a few runs
from staring down an early exit. The defense tightened up, the bats came alive
in the 5th and 6th, and the Chiefs clawed their way back to tie the game in
the top of the 7th. With two outs against them in the bottom of the 7th, and
trying to avoid an extra inning, the Cubs managed to score the winning run
on a close play at home plate. An exciting finish to a hard fought game.
Moving on to the consolation game, the Chiefs once again found themselves
up against the Markham Mariners in what seemed like a repeat of the St. Thomas
Tournament Championship game. In that game Markham managed to come out on
top with a one run win, but still stinging from their sem-final loss, the
Whitby Chiefs handed the Mariners a very quick mercy to take the 3rd place
trophy.
