The Oshawa Legionaires captured the 2011 Eastern Ontario Baseball Association EOBA Mosquito Championship this past weekend in Clarington with an exciting Championship final sweep of the Peterborough Tigers. The Legionaires defeated the Whitby Chiefs 7-1 in the morning semi-final game, with Connor Dorey picking up the pitching win on the mound. That victory setup a Championship final that would have to see Oshawa beat the Tigers twice in order to claim the EOBA title. With a big crowd on hand at Memorial Park South in Bowmanville, the Oshawa Legionaires posted a 9-2 win over the Tigers. Kyle Stevenson led Oshawa at the plate in this game with 3 hits and an rbi while shortstop Derek Steffler had 2 hits and 2 rbi. Meanwhile, Quin McLane and Steffler combined on the mound to limit Peterborough to just 3 hits in the game while striking out 14. McLane (2-0) picked up the win, his 2nd of the Championship. The victory forced a final Championship game to decide the 2011 EOBA Champion. Oshawa Pitcher, Braden Babcock who picked up the win, held the Tigers in check into the 4th inning while the Mosquito Legionaires offense hi-lighted by back to back homeruns by Derek Steffler and Quin McLane jumped out to a 10-4 lead. Steffler went 3 for 4 with 2 homeruns and 5 rbi's, while Joel McNeaney and Mike Madden had 2 hits and 2 rbi each to help lead the Legionaires attack. Oshawa went up 14-7 before the Tigers began to chip away at the lead. Posting 2 runs in the 5th and 4 more runs in the top of the 6th inning the Tigers trailed Oshawa 14-13 before relief pitcher Nathaniel Snider came on to close the door in the 6th and then retire all 3 hitters he faced in the final inning to pick up the save and clinch the EOBA title for Oshawa. The final out fielded by Steffler at shortstop and fired to Babcock at first base sending the Legionaires into a championship celebration. Final score Oshawa 14 Peterborough 13. A special thanks to Rod Holinaty and the entire Clarington Orioles host committee for for their tireless efforts hosting the EOBA championship all weekend. Some terrific baseball is being played at this level and fans got a chance to see it first hand all weekend. Oshawa's Derek Steffler was named Championship Tournament MVP
